What the graph is actually showing you
Each spin deducts your stake. Most spins return nothing; some return a multiple of the stake. The simulator tunes two things from your inputs — how often a win lands and how large it tends to be — so that over a very large number of spins the return converges on the RTP you entered. Volatility changes the shape of that return without changing its size.
Set volatility to Low and you'll see a gentle, wobbling decline: wins land roughly every other spin but are small, so the line drifts down steadily and predictably. Set it to High at the same RTP and the picture changes completely — long, steep slides broken by occasional vertical spikes. Same expected return, wildly different experience, and a far higher chance of hitting zero before the spins run out.
Try this: the same RTP, three different games
Run £100 at £1 a spin over 500 spins on 96% RTP three times, once per volatility setting. Low volatility will usually leave you with something. High volatility will sometimes leave you well ahead and often leave you busted a third of the way in. Neither is "better" — they're different products, and the right one depends on whether you're optimising for play time or for the chance of a big result.
Then change the RTP from 96% to 94% and run it again. That's the version trap in visual form: the same game, deployed differently at two casinos, and the lower build reaches zero noticeably sooner. The limits of this model
A real slot has a specific paytable, bonus rounds, retriggers and a maximum win — none of which are modelled here. This uses a simple random draw calibrated to your RTP and volatility inputs. It's built to make one point clearly: RTP tells you the long-run cost, volatility tells you the ride, and you need both numbers before you choose a game. It is not a way to predict, plan or beat anything.
